Owning a pet was fashionable in the 1920s. Cats and dogs
accompany the appearances of the famous muses of the Parisian life painted by
Marie and whose portraits, like those of Coco Chanel (and refused by the
(and refused by the dressmaker), of Eliane de Beaumont are sold at a high price.
In our painting, it is a spiritual kitten who affectionately puts his paw on the shoulder of
the shoulder of his mistress and seems to share his reading. All the dreamlike art of Marie
Laurencin is present there, suggested by tenuous details: the delicately inclined head of the young woman
of the young woman, the necklace that suggests the party, the subtle shades of gray illuminated
by wine-red roses and pure whites.
