"In her portraits, Marie Laurencin avoids any external influence, any allusion
to a public or private event to the material objects of the everyday life which
fascinate its cubist fellow-members. The only accessories that she uses during half a century are always the same
half-century are always the same ones: the musical instruments (mandolin and guitar), the fan
instruments (mandolin and guitar), the fan, the mirror with hand, ribbons, flowers: only is suggested a

The title inscribed by the artist on the back of the frame, "Music", gives the painting an
allegorical value. It recalls the importance of music in the life of Marie and her
her collaboration to a famous ballet: the sets and costumes of "Les Biches" for
the Russian ballets of Diaghilev (1924). But she also worked on other ballets:
those of Henri Sauguet, "L'éventail de Jeanne"; Le déjeuner sur l'herbe music
by Joseph Lanner, by the Compagnie des Champs-Élysées as well as for the ballet
"Dominique et Dominique" (argument by Jean Davray).
