When the capitaineries were created in 1542, the Chambord estate was assigned a captain and three guards who had authority over hunting and the waters and forests of the County of Blois. They retained their prerogatives over forestry and timber exploitation. However, they had little control and indulged in numerous abuses against peasants and local residents: they were said to be very violent.
