The prestige of these memoirs, rich in curious anecdotes and piquant portraits, is obvious. Their success was considerable. However, this account by the Duchesse d'Abrantès, nicknamed by Théophile Gautier, not without reason, "la duchesse d'Abracadabrantès", should be used with caution.
