Lot no. 11
11-AVRILLION (Mademoiselle). Mémoires sur la vie privée de Joséphine, sa famille et sa cour. À Paris, Chez Ladvocat, 1833, 2 vol. in-8, VIII-391 pp. and 452 pp. with portrait and facsimile, havana half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (Canape). First edition. Tulard, 54: "A work by Villemarest, these memoirs were a prodigious success, helping to boost Josephine's popularity. According to Valérie Masuyer, Queen Hortense considered Mlle Avrillion's memoirs to be fairly accurate, as Joséphine's chambermaid must have collaborated with Villemarest. These memoirs are to Joséphine what Constant's memoirs are to Napoleon; they present the same interest and call for the same reservations". A fine copy.
