Belliard was present at every battle from Valmy to the French campaign, and was always noted for his heroic feats of arms (see Dictionnaire Napoléon, page 192). The publication of these memoirs, though disjointed in form, is nonetheless first-rate: they include important notes on the Egyptian expedition (volume 3), numerous unpublished letters, a conversation with the Emperor in Dresden, etc. Tulard, 121.
