238. [MANUSCRIBE] - MABRU (Claude-Alexis). [Exhibits and file] S.l. Riom ou Clermont], 1777-1803, 43 pieces in-folio or in-4, covered with medium and legible handwriting, numerous erasures and cross-outs, in sheets. An important file documenting the activity, mainly during the Revolution, of Claude-Alexis Mabru (1755-1801), a former fellow student of La Fayette at Harcourt College, son of an intendant of the assets of the Duke of Bouillon, and Treasurer of France in 1774 at the Riom finance office. He had married in 1777 the wealthy Marie-Anne-Charlotte Le Bel (1762-1848), daughter of Antoine Le Bel (1725-1789), lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, Lord of Wissembourg, owner of the Pechelbronn deposits. He had an heir in 1778, also named Claude like his father and grandfather, who made a career as an artillery colonel in the Napoleonic armies; he was followed by Auguste (1780-1853), who was employed by his maternal uncle in Pechelbronn. This very rich and introduced man, a particularly remarkable example of the social rise in the Auvergne as well as the financial harshness of his milieu, was paradoxically a friend of Couthon and Robespierre. He had been one of the founders in March 1790 of the Society of Friends of the Constitution of Clermont, and soon became an active member. He exercised various local functions during the course of the revolutionary events (district tribal judge, mayor of Clermont for 5 months in 1798, etc.), and had some difficulty in converting his very strong Jacobinism in the Thermidorian period (in particular, on 5 Floréal year V, his house in Clermont, the wood market square, was attacked and pillaged by the rabble). He died on October 30, 1801, on his way back from Strasbourg in a car accident. Only two memoirs were printed by him (Essai sur la nature et la répartition de l'impôt en Auvergne, par un habitant de la province, en 1787 ; Quelques réflexions sur le moment présent , in 1798), which makes the part containing
