The recent book dedicated to the Escalier de Cristal presents the famous notebooks written by Henry Pannier which contain a great deal of information: drawings, annotations, names of craftsmen and clients.

Among all these preparatory sketches, we find the model of the Louis XVI style swan torches with the inscription "(Hazard)" next to the drawing. This is probably Eugène Hazart (1838-1891), the Parisian bronze worker who made the torches we present (see bibliography, page 248).

A second drawing of the swan torches, in a Louis XV style, bears the mention : " Durand ",

probably the work of Gervais Durand, who was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 World's Fair.

a silver medal.

Rich in information, the notebooks of Henry Pannier reveal the names of the illustrious sponsors of the

torches. Thus, are mentioned the names of the Grand Duke Nicolas (Nicolas Nikolaïevitch, grandson of Tsar

Nicholas I), S. de Rothschild (Salomon Mayer von Rothschild), Prince Radziwill, Stolipin (probably Piotr

Stolypine, first minister of the Emperor Nicolas II), Polotsoff (Alexandre Polovtsov (1832-1909), founder of the

of the Stieglitz Museum in St. Petersburg and adviser to the Tsar),

Eugène Hazart is a Parisian bronzemaker, member of the Meeting of bronze manufacturers from 1839 and

member of the commission on the ownership of models. He is installed at 122, rue Vieille-du-Temple (from

1843) then at 12, rue St-Gilles, Marais (1856) and finally at 16, rue St-Gilles (1864).
