136- EXPILLY (Claude). Les Poèmes de Messire Claude Expilly, Conseiller du Roy an [sic] son Conseil d'Etat & Prézidant au Parlemant de Grenoble. Grenoble, Pierre Verdier, 1624, in-4, granite brown calf, spine ribbed, cloisonné and fleuronné, red speckled edges (period binding). Some old restorations, angular traces of moisture.

Second edition of Expilly's collective poems (the first was published in 1596 by Abel L'Angelier). It includes the text of the pieces dedicated to Gabrielle d'Estrées, which form the first part; the second part, dedicated to Lesdiguières, groups together poems in his praise; finally, the last part is dedicated to Cardinal de Richelieu and appears for the first time.

A precious copy belonging to Dauphiné historian and genealogist Guy Allard (1635-1716), who noted on the first endpaper: "Mr Du Prayet conseiller au Parlement, who married Mr Expilly's granddaughter, gave me this book on May 5, 1669"; and renewed this ownership mark on the title leaf. It seems superfluous to emphasize the rarity of such mentions by Allard. The date indicates that the book came into his possession only three years after he began his research.

Cipher jump from 297 to 300 without missing.

A very good copy.
