[Paris], Imprimerie de Prault, 1776, in-4, green half-basane, smooth mute spine decorated with a geometric gilt semis, triple gilt fillet on the boards (period binding). Headbands worn, upper hinge entirely split, corners and edges damaged, light supra-paginal wetness. Evidence for Augustin-Joseph de Mailly d'Haucourt (1707-1794), Marshal of France in 1783 and finally leader of the impromptu defense of the Tuileries on August 10, 1792, which earned him, with delay, the honors of the guillotine under Joseph Lebon's mild reign in Arras. Dated November 19, 1756, this reply from Antoine-Marie d'Hozier de Sérigny (1721-1801) was not communicated to Mailly until June 14, 1771 by d'Argenson's son (who happened to be Mailly's son-in-law), and was attached to the documents supplied in 1776 to the two commissioners of proof for the King's Orders. It is most complimentary of the authenticity of the evidence establishing the Mailly d'Haucourt family's relationship with the elder Mailly branch.
