The engraving depicts the Battle of Martinique, a naval battle between an English squadron of thirteen ships commanded by Hyde Parker and La Motte Piquet's three ships covering the entry into the port of an important convoy from France. The English attack was contained, saving a large part of the convoy and confirming La Motte-Picquet's maneuvering skills.
