Appointed sub-prefect at Bressuire, Barante describes his administration. After becoming prefect of the Vendée, he recounts the ups and downs of the new Napoleon town. The period 1813-1814 is covered in Volume II. Bertier, 58: "Volumes 2 to 4 cover the period from 1813 to 1832. Connected with Mmes de Staël and Récamier, man of letters, prefect of the Empire, rallied to the Monarchy in 1814, peer in 1819, ambassador after the July Revolution of 1830, Barante played an important role.
