87-CROSSARD. Mémoires militaires et historiques pour servir à histoire de la guerre depuis 1792 jusqu'en 1815 inclusment. A Paris, Chez Migneret, 1829, 6 vol. in-8, red half-maroquin, smooth spine, gilt roulettes, number in center of covers (period binding). Rare first edition. "An artillery officer, Crossard emigrated in 1791, joined the army of the princes, became a staff officer in the Dutch army before entering the service of Austria. During the French Revolution, he served in Flanders, Germany and Italy. He only returned to the French army on the return of the Bourbons, fighting throughout the Empire in Austrian, Russian and Spanish uniforms. The account of his battles against the revolutionary armies occupies the first two volumes" (Fierro). Volumes 3 to 6 concern the Consulate and Empire, and although Jean Tulard considers these memoirs "of mediocre interest except for 1814", they are one of the most copious accounts of a French émigré in the service of foreign powers: he was an officer in the Dutch army from 1793 to 1795, in the service of Austria from 1796 to 1812, and a colonel in the Russian army from 1812 to 1814. Fierro, 372. Tulard, 372. Bertier, 290. Catalog of the Huart collection, 416. An exceptional copy from Marie-Louise's library, bound in her cipher. Ex-libris Calvin Bullock.
