Espinchal emigrated on July 19, 1789, traveling to Germany, Italy and Venice in 1790-1791, then to Switzerland and the Rhine, before joining Condé's army. There, he created a company of gentilshommes d'Auvergne and fought in the 1792 campaign, though not at Valmy. He returned to France in 1801.
His enormous diary was only partially edited by Ernest d'Hauterive, who took over what had previously been published on the organization of the Auvergne corps at Coblence". (Fierro, 518).
One of the best accounts of the period.
