156-GAY (Thomas and Gaspard). Mémoires des frères Gay de Die, pour servir à l'histoire des guerres de religion en Dauphiné et spécialement dans le Diois, published according to the original manuscripts, with additional text, genealogical notes and unpublished documents by Jules Chevalier (...). Montbéliard, Imprimerie P. Hoffmann, 1888, in-8, [4]-353 pp. with table, fir-green half-maroquin, ribbed spine, gilt head, cover preserved (Pagnant).

Limited edition of 200 copies.

Unique publication of diaries and texts written by the two Protestant brothers Thomas (1547-1586) and Gaspard (1560-1606) Gay (with snippets given by the last brother Antoine Gay, 1571-1653), and running from 1574 to 1640. The gaps in the original manuscript forced Abbé Chevalier to complete the missing passages by giving a linear account of events, a procedure still tolerated at the end of the 19th century, but not recommended in good criticism.
