176-GUISE (Henri II de Lorraine, Duc de). Les Mémoires de feu Monsieur le Duc de Guise. A Cologne, chez Pierre de La Place, 1668, 2 volumes in-16, (6)-458 pp. and 283 pp. red morocco, ribbed spine, gilt edges, interior lace (Belz-Niédrée).

First Elzévirienne edition published in the same year as the original.

Curious "Memoirs" written by Philippe Goibaud Du Bois at the request of Saint-Yon, the duke's secretary: Henri de Lorraine (1614-1664), the youngest son of the duke and as such destined for the clergy (he was archbishop of Reims), only became fifth duke of Guise in 1640 following the death of his elder brother, the prince of Joinville. His extremely volatile character made him the fable of his time. This book relates only one of his ventures, but certainly his most extravagant: the expedition he mounted to Naples to secure recognition of his house's claim to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, following the Masaniello revolt (1647), which ended in abject failure (he was even taken prisoner by the Spaniards from 1648 to 1652).

A fine copy.
