185-HÜE (François). Dernières années du règne et de la vie de Louis XVI. A Londres, Harper et Co, 1806, in-8, XII-530 pp, red morocco, smooth ornate spine, wide gilt lace framing the covers, fleuron at the corners, gilt edges, gilt chain on the edges and inside (English binding of the period). Extremely rare first edition. The binder has omitted the portrait of Louis XVI. "In the service of the dauphin from 1787, Hüe recounts his life with the royal family... his account of August 10th and the stay at the Temple is very interesting" (Fierro). More broadly, his presence close to the royal family made him a privileged observer, and his account, from the Estates-General to Madame Royale's release in 1795, is exceptional. François Hue, an officer in the King's Chamber, points out in the first French edition (1814) that the 1806 edition was banned in France. The various bibliographies and the Bibliothèque Nationale catalog do not mention any edition prior to that of Paris, 1814. Only P. Ladoué, Les panégyristes de Louis XVI et de Marie-Antoinette. Essai de bibliographie..., mentions this first edition (no. 63). A fine copy. Some foxing.
