226-LEVIS (Pierre-Marc-Gaston de). Souvenirs et portraits, 1780-1789. À Paris, chez François Buisson, 1813, in-8, XXIII-268 pp, red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, gilt fillets framing the covers, interior roulette, gilt edges (Allo). First edition. Censored by Napoleon, this work was republished under the First and Second Restorations with the passages deleted from the first edition. A member of the Assemblée Constituante in 1789, Lévis emigrated in 1792 and took part in the Quiberon expedition. He did not return to France until the Consulate, and was active in economic affairs during the Empire. His Souvenirs et portraits are a succession of notes on the people he came into contact with, from the Comte de Maurepas to the Comtesse de Boufflers, not forgetting Necker and Madame Du Deffand. A very fine copy.
