282-NODIER (Charles). Souvenirs, épisodes et portraits, pour servir à l'histoire de la Révolution et de l'Empire. Paris, Levavasseur, 1831, 2 vol. in-8, XXXVI-286-[2] pp. and 330-[2] pp. portrait, blue half-maroquin, ribbed spine, arms repeated on spine, gilt head (later binding).

First edition.

Memoirs by the famous Romantic writer who, by his own admission, believed that there is nothing more vulgar than facts, and nothing on which there is less agreement (preliminaries, page XII). His aim, then, is not to recount history objectively, but to put sensations together.
The first volume, devoted to the Revolution, looks at the Terror, Robespierre, the émigrés in 1799 and the Thermidorian reaction.
The second gives a good description of Paris prisons under the Consulate (where he was incarcerated), information on the Fournier-Sarloveze and Malet plots, and on Freemasonry and Carbonarism.

Tulard, 1082.

A fine copy bearing the arms of the Marquis Des Roys, with his bookplate.

Spine slightly faded.
