302-[POMPADOUR (Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de)]. Memoirs of Madame la Marquise de Pompadour. In which one discovers the motives for wars and peace treaties, embassies and negotiations in the various courts of Europe; secret intrigues and intrigues, the character of generals, that of ministers of state, the cause of their elevation and the subject of their disgrace; and generally all that was most remarkable at the court of France during the last twenty years of the reign of Louis XV. Written by herself. Liège, s.n., 1768, 2 volumes in one vol. in-12, X-160 pp and -[2]-136 pp, green morocco, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges, interior roulette (period binding). Memoirs probably apocryphal, first published in 1766. The text aims to rehabilitate her on the chapters of morals, royal spending and personal enrichment. It claims to present "all that was most remarkable at Court during the last twenty years of the Regne of Louis XV", based on authentic documents classified and reviewed by a statesman. "The Lady who paints the picture had a sense of color. She wrote hastily in detached pieces with no sequence or connection. We had to spread out to the right and to the left & make our way through a sea of writing." (Preface). A fine copy. Russian library label. Spine and top of first cover faded.
