330-SAINT-PRIEST (Comte de). Mémoires. Reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. The Revolution and Emigration. Pub. by Baron de Barante. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1929, 2 vol. in-12, IX-251 pp. and 237 pp. frontispiece to each volume, index, half parma morocco, ornate ribbed spine, red head, cover preserved (period binding). First edition. 1/150 copies on Marais vellum. Tulard, 1306. "French ambassador to Constantinople, Saint-Priest was minister in the Necker cabinet, secretary to the King's household from July 1789 to 1790, minister of the interior in August, resigning in December 1790. He emigrated immediately afterwards, traveling to Stockholm, then to Russia, Prussia, Austria... soliciting the intervention of other European sovereigns on Louis XVI's behalf. In 1795, Louis XVIII called him to Verona and appointed him minister of his household. He followed the king to Blankenburg and Mittau, before retiring to Switzerland in 1808. His memoirs are crucial to the first two years of the Revolution, and to the story of the rise of subversion and the dilution of authority. The period from 1797 to 1807 is dealt with in the last chapter of volume two". A fine copy.
