Hervé Clérel de Tocqueville, father of Alexis, joined Louis XVI's Constitutional Guard at the start of the Revolution and narrowly escaped the guillotine. After an administrative and political career under the Restoration, Comte de Tocqueville suspended his activities after the July Monarchy. This work completes his Histoire philosophique du règne de Louis XV, published in 1838. In it, he analyzes the causes of the French Revolution, pointing out the errors of some and others, with remarkable impartiality. A fine copy. Some brown spots.
