371-VIDOCQ (Eugène-François). Mémoires de Vidocq, chef de la police de sureté, jusqu'en 1827, aujourd'hui propriétaire et fabricant de papiers à Saint-Mandé. Paris, Tenon, 1828-1829, 4 vol. in-8, half-plum basane, smooth spine decorated throughout (period binding). {236035}

Rare first edition.

Tulard, 1481: "Vidocq's beginnings were under the Empire. He was used as a sheep by the Prefect of Police, Dubois, and the head of the criminal affairs department, Henry, and later headed a security brigade. In the midst of highly romanticized anecdotes, this is a good description of the world of crime and the police. (Tulard)
Tulard, 1481. Bertier, 988.
These memoirs are said to have been extensively revised by Emile Maurice and Louis L'Héritier.
The first three volumes bear Vidocq's signature. The fourth is unsigned, as Vidocq refused to sign it. Jean Savant, in Vrais mémoires de Vidocq, indicates that his signature has been crudely imitated, which is not the case for our copy.

Frontispiece portrait in vol. 4, catalog by Tenon, Libraire, at the beginning of vol. 1 (12 pp.).

A fine copy.

Wet stamp H. Deydier in Aubenas.

Spine a little faded and a few brown spots.
