401. [AMERICANA] - [MAZZEI (Filippo)]. Recherches historiques et politiques sur les États-Unis de l'Amérique Septentrionale [Historical and political researches on the United States of North America], which deals with the establishment of the thirteen Colonies, their relations & dissensions with Great Britain, their governments before & after the Revolution, &c. By a citizen of Virginia. Avec quatre lettres d'un bourgeois de New-Heaven sur l'unité de la législation. À Colle et à Paris, Chez Froullé, 1788, 4 volumes in 2 vols. in-8, XVI-383-259 pp. and 292-366 pp. half-fawn speckled basane, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, red edges (period binding). First edition. The author, Filippo Mazzéi (1730-1816), an Italian emigrant to America, was very close to Thomas Jefferson. He paints a comprehensive picture of the situation in the United States: state formation, institutions, polemics with Mably and Raynal, finance and commerce, the Cincinnatus Society, slavery... The four Lettres d'un bourgeois de New Heaven are by Condorcet. A good copy. Spine slightly rubbed, one spine slightly damaged.
