582. [MEDICINE]. [GIRODAT (Jean-Louis)]. François Gigot de Lapeyronie (1678-1747) became the King's first surgeon in 1736 on the death of Mareschal, and remained associated with the royal decree of April 23, 1743, which confirmed the separation of the surgeons' corps from that of barbers, and began to equalize the status of surgeons with that of physicians. Thus began a long process of rapprochement with the medical profession, which took over a century to complete, and was fought with astonishing fanaticism by the faculties of medicine; the lawsuit brought against Lapeyronie by the Faculty of Paris provides excellent testimony to this. Marbled paper cover, very faded. Spine missing.
