Trained in military cartography and topographical drawing, Thomas Davies (1737- 1812) was a British artillery officer stationed in the Americas. He produced watercolors depicting the fauna, flora and landscapes of Quebec, New York and the Hudson Valley. His work combines the scientific rigor and aesthetic sense characteristic of the naturalist illustration of his time: Thomas Davies is considered today to be the most brilliant of his kind. A number of his watercolors were published in London in the General synopsis of birds (1781-1785).
