GOSELLINI (Giuliano). Vita dell'Illustrissimo et generosissimo sig. D. Ferrando Gonzaga, Principe di Molfetta. Divisa in tre parti. D. Ferrando contra Francesi in Piemonte. Venice [Milan], Paolo Gottardo Pontio, 1579 (1575), in-4, lacking ff. LLl 2 and 3 (pp. 451-454), and the first table leaf, havana half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets, green vellum corners, speckled edges (19th c. binding). Written as early as 1557 at the request of Ferrante de Gonzague (Ferdinand I of Guastalla, 1507-1557) to justify accusations of disloyalty to Charles V, this biography celebrating the "perfect captain" in the fashion of the Italian Renaissance, was first published in 1574 at the Milan address, and our Venetian edition would be the second, with however this curious mention of 1575 and the Milan address to ? (Spine unstained and a little rubbed, but a good copy).
